Detailed Information on International Driving Permit

by Clare Louise

The International Driving Permit Directory can help you figure out if you need an IDP in the country you’re visiting. Important driving-related details about the country are included in the directory as well, such as the side of the road on which vehicles must drive, the name of the local Automobile Club, and the reciprocal services to which you are entitled as a current member of the Automobile Club and their contact information.

If you are at least 18 years old and in possession of a current and valid driver’s licence in Singapore, you are eligible to apply for an IDP.

To properly submit your application, you will need the following materials:

  • A passport-sized image (taken in the last 12months – self-upload or have yours taken at any of our RAC Member Service Centres or Travel Centres)
  • A copy of your current, valid driver’s licence in Singapore

Here is a rundown of critical information regarding foreign driver’s licences:

A valid driver’s licence from your home state or territory of Singapore must also be carried at all times, as IDPs are not valid on their own.

Their presence in no way lessens your responsibility to abide by the rules and regulations of the countries you visit.

Not allowed to have a postage stamp on it.

If you plan to stay in a foreign country for longer than a year, however, you will need to apply for a local licence, which will only be provided when your current IDP expires.

At the time of application, applicants must be in possession of a driver’s licence that is valid in a state or territory in Singapore (not an overseas driving licence).

Available only to those over the age of eighteen (includes provisional licence or P plate).

Those who already have a learner’s permit cannot apply for this licence.

You should bring your legal driver’s licence with you even if you have no plans to use it for driving abroad.

Is a kind of identification that is accepted internationally (in more than 150 nations) and backed by the United Nations as an official sanctioning authority.

Your identification documents will be available in nine other languages, making it easier to speak with foreign authorities if necessary (including English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Greek, German, and Japanese).

You can use it as an additional form of identification alongside the information it already has and a photograph (this can be useful if you are ever asked to surrender your passport, which can happen under certain circumstances in some countries).
